Kayaking The Edisto River, South Carolina

Adventure was in the air…

My wife and I had an energy filled vacation last week.  Biking the Virginia Creeper Trail in Virginia, which was awesome with all the “rhoadies” and the whitewater stream along the whole 17 miles of mountain terrain.

Then it was on to The Edisto River in South Carolina where we hooked up with Carolina Heritage Outfitters.  They set us up with a couple kayaks, we loaded our gear, and off we went.  They shuttled us 23 miles upstream where we launched into the Edisto.  A medium speed flowing river allowed us to relax and take in the sights and constant bird chatter.  We saw a lot of Piliated Woodpeckers which was cool because they are one of my favorite birds.

We paddled 13 miles, (about 5 hours) and came around the bend to see our sleeping accommodations.  A treehouse!  Located on a pennisula, it was perfect!  What a relaxing place to end up that day.  We ate wild smoked salmon and Godiva Chocolates while sitting around the campfire.

We launched the kayaks early the next morning after a hoot-owl filled night of sleep.  A gorgeous morning sunrise, warm and still, full of life.  The bird songs were incredible!  We paddled slowly taking openings into cypress tree swamp backwaters looking for gators.  This is something I have dreamed about doing for some time now.  My camera was clicking.

After our Edisto River trip, it was on to Georgia and the Okeefenokee Swamp.  We arrived at the Okeefenokee canoe outpost early the next morning after a nice motel room with a hot shower and big breakfast.  As we launched the canoe  the first thing we see is a 10 foot alligator slowly swimming our way, without hardly a move it just disappeared under the water.  What a beautiful place, a place to get lost in, both physically and mentally.

We saw several gators and I took a multitude of pictures.  It was my goal to get close enough to one so I could photograph it’s eyeball.  I got several eyeball shots, even of a one-eyed gator!

After a great paddle in the swamp, we headed north.  We stopped at a place called Goats On The Roof along the road we we travelling on.  We travel mostly two lane roads if we can because you get to see so much more interesting stuff and it’s easier to stop, take pictures, or just go slower.

That is a summery of the main portions of our little adventure.  Just thought you might enjoy seeing and learning a little more about me.
